Chatroulette on the ivories

Yeah, we admit we’ve already used Chatroulette. But in the space of just a few weeks it’s already old news. And, lets be honest, there are few too many, ahem, interesting users out there. In any case, just as the world’s interest was starting to fall, along comes this chap with a piano to show what you can do with a bit of creativity and a sense of humour. We like.

This Too Shall Pass

They created a viral tornado with their  video for ‘Here We Go Again’ in 2006 and now it seems US geek rockers OK Go have upped the ante further for ‘This Too Shall Pass’. Check it out below. And, for old time’s sake, the treadmill hilarities of their first hit below that.

Billionaire Boys Club

You’ve probably heard of Billionaire Boys Club. It may sound like a dimly lit Dubai bar with drinks the price of a small flat in Mirdif and an extremely grumpy doorman about the same size, but it’s actually the clothing line of Pharrell William (he of N.E.R.D fame) and Japanese fashion legend Nigo. And, as the name suggests, it’s often slightly on the pricey side of things.

If BBC’s preppy styled pieces are your thing, then you might be interested to see the new collection, now available at Boutique 1. Apparently, the theme of the new assortment of tees, hoodies and trainers is ‘Wealth is of the heart and mind, not of the pocket’. That’s all well and good, but there’s no way we could pay for this stuff with our hearts and minds alone. Hmmm, Jedi mind control…

Polaroid’s Factory Jacket

Polaroid fans rejoice. Just when you thought all the world’s precious (and slightly pricey) film for your magical little cameras was running out, The Impossible Project (odd name, yes) comes along to start selling it again.

Now, obviously the main deal here is that previously impossible to find Polaroid films are now available, so whoopdidoo about that, but something that caught our attention more was the rather snazzy and excessively 80s Factory Jacket they’re offering as well. Just look at that nylon sheen. Behold the colourful stripe across the centre.

To utter a phrase we’ve used quite often on this site: we want.

There’s only a few available (they were actually found in the vaults of a former Polaroid factory) so get in quick. And can you get us one too please.

Virgin Galactic’s spaceship gets warmed up

Having unveiled their fancy spaceship in December, Virgin Galactic have now given the VSS Enterprise its first airborne adventure. The first craft of the SpaceShipTwo class took off this week from the Mojave Spaceport in California, carried by White Knight II. (That’s actually two flying machines your seeing there, the VSS Enterprise is the bit in the middle and this is bit that will do the whole ‘space’ thing.)

Now, last year those flush chaps in Abu Dhabi invested one heck of a lot of money in Virgin Galactic. This should mean that at some point we’ll be seeing such spaceship sights over here. Obviously we haven’t got a spaceport yet (Ras Al Khaimah’s hilarious effort has sadly been canned), but I’d like to nominate Dubai Terminal Two, just so the departures board would read something like ‘Baghdad, Basra, Space, Mogadishu’.

Ferrari World’s 200km/h rollercoaster

If you enjoy seeing your breakfast again, then no doubt you’re looking forward to the roller coasters on Ferrari World, the world’s biggest indoor theme park set to open on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island later this year. And just to get fans of ludicrous theme park rides giddy with excitement, developers have given a few statistical hints as to what we can expect.

The Ferrari F430 replica four-seater ride (above) will be two kilometres long and travel up to speeds of 95 km/h. And because the track fits two cars running side-by-side, it’ll feel like a race, with a different winner each time.

But this is small fry compared to the frankly gut-wrenching stats of Ferrari World’s F1 rollercoaster, which is rumoured to travel at “speeds exceeding 200 kmh”.

Other attractions will include a driving and racing school for youngsters and a “Flume ride” that takes you on through the heart of a giant Ferrari 599 engine.

It sounds ridiculous. And yes, we want to go so very bad.

REX’s own little Art Dubai

It’s time for dicky bows, bizarre hair dos and interesting colour combinations. That’s right, Art Dubai kicks off this week down at the Madinat Jumeirah. We’re not exhibiting this time around, but we’d like to give you a sneak preview of GALLERY REX: RECONCEPTUALISING INFINITY, that we’re hoping will have a major presence next year. Send us your attempts (ideally using MS Paint) and you could be part of the show.

Adidas unveils football’s official fragrance

It was almost inevitable that this summer’s World Cup Finals in South Africa, a competition that has sold off almost every nook and cranny of its being to sponsors, would get its own ‘signature scent’.

Well here it is.

Adidas’ Pure Game is “bold and unexpected fragrance that perfectly represents the spirit of diversity in unity” and is “the result of a harmonious blend of natural ingredients found throughout the Rainbow Nation’s diverse countryside”. Absolutely. And there’s us thinking it would smell of sweat and overpriced cans of warm beer. Actually, we’ll just had a sniff and it is rather nice, although not quite as “unexpected” as we were hoping for.

Adidas Pure Game is available now.
